Prevent impaired driving due to drugs, alcohol
December 1, 2024
This month’s road safety goal is recognizing and addressing impairment caused by drugs, alcohol, or other substances. Choose one or more of the following activities to help you reach that goal.
Basic
- Hold a tailgate meeting and use WorkSafeBC’s guide to discuss the risks of impairment and your duties to prevent it in your workplace: WorkSafeBC Substance Use and Workplace Impairment Toolbox Meeting Guide
- Remind drivers of the legal consequences of driving while impaired by alcohol or drugs: Alcohol and drug-related driving prohibitions and suspensions
- Be proactive. Promote ICBC’s winter driving Counterattack campaign and raise awareness of impaired driving risks to all your employees.
Better
- Review our tips on educating and training staff and supervisors, and responding to impairment among employees who drive for work: Impaired Driving Tool Kit
- Encourage supervisors to watch for circumstances or situations with greater risk of impairment.
Best
- Develop an impaired driving policy or review your existing policy: Impairment Policy Template
- Review the policy with employees as part of training and supervision: Training, communication and supervision tips
