Prevent fatigue-related crashes

November 2, 2026

This month’s road safety goal is to prevent crashes that involve driver fatigue. Choose one or more of the following activities to help you reach that goal, using the recommended resources.

The basics

These activities can help you focus on high-priority risks and basic compliance requirements.

  • Educate managers, supervisors, and drivers about the signs of fatigue: Impacts, causes and warning signs
  • Hold a tailgate meeting to discuss the risks of driving while fatigued, what causes fatigue, and what drivers can do to avoid it: What drivers can do
  • Remind drivers of the requirement for them to be “fit for duty” before getting behind the wheel. Have them review self care tips to improve their mental and physical health: Driver Health and Wellness Tool Kit
  • Encourage employees to raise fatigue-related issues with supervisors or managers. Ask them about times they’ve felt fatigued behind the wheel.

Better steps

Build on the basics with activities that strengthen your road safety practices and results.

  • Include fatigue in your driving risk assessment and watch our one-hour webinar or brief excerpts to learn practical methods for managing it, including an employer case study: Reducing the Risks of Driver Fatigue Webinar
  • Train drivers on how to adjust seats, head restraints, foot position, and mirrors before they start on their trip to help reduce fatigue: Preparing your vehicle

Best practices

Take it further with activities that help you maintain strong performance and a lasting safety culture.
