Supervise drivers effectively
July 2, 2026
This month’s road safety goal is to provide effective supervision of employees who drive for work. Choose one or more of the following activities to help you reach that goal, using the recommended resources.
The basics
These activities can help you focus on high-priority risks and basic compliance requirements.
- Review your road safety responsibilities and suggested actions you can take: Supervisor Occupational Road Safety Responsibilities Guide
- Document all supervision activities (e.g., tailgate talks, vehicle checks, ride-alongs). Records show due diligence and help track progress over time.
- Make sure all employees who drive for work (full time, part time, or occasionally) understand their road safety responsibilities: Explaining Employee Road Safety Responsibilities Tailgate Meeting Guide
- Have employees take a practice road safety test online and review the results: ICBC’s driving knowledge practice test
Better steps
Build on the basics with activities that strengthen your road safety practices and results.
- Understand your responsibilities when employees use their own vehicle on the job and create a policy or review your existing one: Keeping Employees Safe When Driving Personal Vehicles Webinar and Using Employee Owned Vehicles for Work Procedure Template
- Review the traits and behaviours of safe drivers and learn how to help your employees adopt them: Steering Toward Safer Driving Behaviours Webinar
- Set up a calendar to schedule tailgate meetings, driver training, seatbelt spot checks, ride alongs, etc.: Communicating with drivers
- Develop a safe driving policy or review your existing policy with drivers. Ask them questions to demonstrate their knowledge of your requirements: Building Strong Road Safety Policies Guide
Best practices
Take it further with activities that help you maintain strong performance and a lasting safety culture.
- Learn supervisory best practices and watch a video explaining how to apply them: Supervising Employees Who Drive for Work Online Course
- Conduct short post-incident reviews (after near-misses, minor crashes, or complaints) with drivers to reinforce lessons learned and prevent recurrence: Crash Investigations Guide
