Identify hazards, assess risks, and take action

August 4, 2026

This month’s road safety goal is to identify hazards that are likely to cause crashes, assess the risks they create, and set priorities for action. Choose one or more of the following activities to help you reach that goal.

The basics

These activities can help you focus on high-priority risks and basic compliance requirements.

  • Hold a tailgate meeting to find out which driving-related hazards pose the greatest risks for your employees. Then pick at least 2 of those hazards and start taking steps to reduce the risks.
  • Learn how to do a basic road safety risk assessment or review and update your last one: Basic Driving Risk Assessment Tool

Better steps

Build on the basics with activities that strengthen your road safety practices and results.

Best practices

Take it further with activities that help you maintain strong performance and a lasting safety culture.

  • Assemble a small team to assess driving risks using our RiskCheck online tool. Implement measures that reduce risks for at least 3 of the highest rated hazards: RiskCheck
  • Take our online course explaining a proven process to identify and implement the most effective controls to reduce driving-related risks: Reducing Risks Using the Hierarchy of Controls Online Course
  • Set risk reduction goals for the next year. Establish metrics and track them.
