Prevent impaired driving due to drugs, alcohol
December 1, 2026
This month’s road safety goal is recognizing and addressing impairment caused by drugs, alcohol, or other substances. Choose one or more of the following activities to help you reach that goal.
The basics
These activities can help you focus on high-priority risks and basic compliance requirements.
- Hold a tailgate meeting to discuss the risks of impairment and your legal duties to prevent it in your workplace: WorkSafeBC Substance Use and Workplace Impairment Toolbox Meeting Guide
- Remind drivers of the legal consequences of driving while impaired by alcohol or drugs: Alcohol and drug-related driving prohibitions and suspensions
- Promote ICBC’s winter driving Counterattack campaign and raise awareness of impaired driving risks for all your employees.
- Post contact information for local taxi, ride-hail, and safe ride programs to make driving alternatives visible and accessible.
Better steps
Build on the basics with activities that strengthen your road safety practices and results.
- Review our tips on educating and training staff and supervisors to spot and respond to impairment among employees who drive for work: Impaired Driving Tool Kit
- Train supervisors to recognize high-risk situations (e.g., after holiday parties, shift changes, or extended hours).
- Encourage employees to plan ahead for safe transportation after work events where alcohol or cannabis may be consumed.
- Do spot checks to ensure employees are fit to drive.
Best practices
Take it further with activities that help you maintain strong performance and a lasting safety culture.
- Develop an impaired driving policy or review your existing policy. Ensure it covers alcohol, cannabis, and other drugs, medications, and “morning after” impairment: Impairment Policy Template
- Review the policy in training sessions and have workers commit to it in writing.
- Discuss cannabis use openly with your employees. Provide facts about how it impairs driving ability and remind employees about your workplace expectations: Cannabis impairment
