Road safety presentation fills training need
Like many small- to medium-sized employers, Glotman Simpson Consulting Engineers has employees who drive as part of their job. To help keep them safe, the company turned to an expert no-cost resource: Road Safety at Work’s advisory services.
The structural engineering firm booked a virtual Lunch and Learn professional development presentation for its employees. The session explained road safety basics and provided several useful driving tips.
“We received great value from it,” says Lauren MacKinnon, chief operating officer. “Our team found the content useful and directly applicable to their daily activities.”
Any work-related driving carries risk
Based in Vancouver, Glotman Simpson has satellite offices in Surrey, Victoria, Calgary, and Los Angeles. Its structural engineers spend “a significant amount of time” driving to client sites, explains Shirin Escarcha, marketing lead.
In BC, whenever a vehicle is being used for work, it’s a workplace. That means each employer is responsible for the health and safety of their employees whether they are driving that work vehicle, or a passenger in it. Crashes are the leading cause of traumatic workplace deaths in the province.
Glotman Simpson embraces its responsibilities. “We have a duty to our staff to ensure their safety,” says Escarcha. Road safety is included in the company’s occupational health and safety system. And the firm provides regular training refreshers to help ensure employees don’t get complacent behind the wheel.
Road safety is smart business
Booking a Road Safety for Work presentation helped meet several business needs.
“As a medium-sized company, having access to expert training programs of this nature is invaluable,” says MacKinnon.
The presentation also serves as an ongoing training tool. The company recorded the session to use when onboarding new employees. “The content is not just for our structural engineers. Those driving to and from work daily can also benefit from this session,” Escarcha says.

During the presentation, Road Safety at Work’s Rick Walters explained why road safety matters, noting costs and consequences for people and organizations. He also provided expert practical advice and identified Road Safety at Work resources for vehicle inspections, distracted driving, and driver responsibilities.
“Rick was a fantastic facilitator and a joy to work with in curating the content to fit our needs,” says MacKinnon.
She encourages other employers to book a no-cost session, for the benefit of employees and their organizations. “I would recommend this presentation to others looking to provide their staff with informative and important training that relates to driving for work,” she says.
