Time of day

Chart seven shows the percentage of crashes occurring during three-hour time blocks starting at midnight. Most weekday crashes occur during the afternoon rush hours of 3 to 6 p.m. while the peak time for weekend crashes is earlier – between noon and 3 p.m.

Note that on both weekends and weekdays, there are far fewer crashes between 6 and 9 p.m. If your current schedule has you driving during peak crash periods, be aware of the elevated risk and consider adjusting your schedule to take advantage of lower-risk periods.
