2012 – 2016
Average cost of all claims compared to MVI claims
From 2012 to 2016, the average cost of all WorkSafeBC claims was $22,000 while the average cost of a MVI claim was $49,000, more than two times as much. In addition to the substantial direct costs of an MVI claim, there are indirect costs, such as lost productivity, incident investigation and driver replacement costs, which can make a claim even more expensive. The graph below compares the average cost of a motor vehicle crash to the average cost of all claims.
Total claims cost
As the number of MVI claims has decreased in the past few years, so have the total MVI claims costs paid in a given year. As shown in the graph below, MVI claims costs have decreased from a high of $63 million in 2013 to $53 million in 2016. During the same period, the cost of all WorkSafeBC claims, shown in the second graph below, decreased until 2016 when they rose again.
