TripCheck

TripCheck is a step-by-step planning tool to help you reduce the risks associated with driving for work. It takes about 3 minutes to complete and covers the driver, the trip, and the vehicle. Drivers who are prepared with a plan are better equipped to deal with the hazards they will encounter.

IS THIS TRIP NECESSARY?

The best way to eliminate exposure to driving-related hazards is simply to avoid driving. Before your employees automatically get behind the wheel, ask if they can get the job done without travelling. Consider the alternatives. Will a phone call, online meeting, e-mail or video conference work?

Is this trip necessary?*

Yes

If it’s determined that the trip is necessary, there are usually alternatives to driving. Can you use a bus or taxi? Is your destination close enough that you should cycle or walk? Does travelling by plane make more sense than a multi-hour drive?

If driving is necessary, the next step is to build a trip plan. We recommend two options, depending on the nature of the trip.

For routine trips*, operating the vehicle according to legal requirements, following company policies and safe work procedures and applying measures in TripCheck will sufficiently minimize risks.

* What qualifies as a routine trip varies among companies. Think of a routine trip as a regularly scheduled trip that the employee has previously completed (more than once) in the same vehicle and road, weather and traffic conditions. Routine trips involve known circumstances and reasonably predictable hazards that have low risk levels.

For non-routine trips, use a risk ranking process to evaluate foreseeable hazards. Doing so helps you identify opportunities to limit exposure, and plan accordingly.

According to our company's criteria, this trip is a routine trip. During this trip, I will obey traffic laws, live up to my driving responsibilities and follow company policies and procedures. I will complete the basic trip plan form.

Human error is a significant factor in most crashes. Drivers can greatly reduce the likelihood of making errors that contribute to a crash by making sure they are physically and mentally prepared.

I am fit to drive, well-rested, alert, and ready to focus on the driving tasks ahead. I am not under the influence of drugs, alcohol, or medications that may impair my ability to drive.*
